MD Groundworks was appointed to carry out a highly sensitive infrastructure project at a UK Power Networks substation in Central London. The task involved the reconstruction of an 80-year-old boundary wall that had been demolished during previous cable installation works. Due to the substation’s operational status and the historic nature of the wall, the project posed several unique technical and logistical challenges.
Project Overview
Client: UK Power Networks
Location: Central London
Sector: Utilities & Electrical Infrastructure
Services: Vacuum Excavation, Brick Wall Reconstruction, Substation Works, Traffic Management
Scope of Work
- Sourcing period-accurate London bricks to match the demolished 1930s wall
- Rebuilding the substation boundary without disturbing live underground cables
- Installing a reinforced concrete base to span multiple high-voltage cable routes
- Deploying vacuum excavation to protect active services during groundwork
- Implementing a Section 50 Licence and Traffic Management Plan to maintain public access and road safety
- Installing steel palisade security fencing atop the new wall
Safety & Methodology
Operating within a live substation environment required meticulous planning and safety protocols. MD Groundworks used Vac-Ex technology to safely remove soil around live high-voltage cables, eliminating the risk of contact or damage from mechanical digging. Once the services were exposed and protected, a cast-in-place concrete base was installed to provide stable support for the new boundary wall.
Material Sourcing & Aesthetic Integration
To preserve the appearance and character of the site, MD Groundworks sourced historically accurate London stock bricks that closely matched the original structure. The brickwork was completed to a high standard, ensuring seamless integration with the remaining perimeter and compliance with heritage expectations.
Result & Impact
The project was delivered safely, on time, and in full compliance with UKPN standards and local authority regulations. The rebuilt wall now:
- Restores the original substation boundary
- Protects live electrical infrastructure beneath
- Enhances site security with modern palisade fencing
- Maintains the historical integrity of the location
This case highlights MD Groundworks expertise in delivering complex substation works in dense urban environments, combining precision excavation, heritage building restoration, and stringent safety measures.
