11kV Electrical Infrastructure Upgrade – Amex Stadium, Brighton

MD Groundworks was commissioned by Brighton & Hove Albion Football Club to undertake a critical 11kV electrical infrastructure upgrade at the Amex Stadium in Brighton.. The works were driven by new FA Premier League broadcasting regulations, which required enhanced electrical capacity to support advanced live broadcasting and compliance across all clubs.

Project Overview

Client: Brighton & Hove Albion F.C.

Location: Amex Stadium, Brighton

Duration: Throughout 2024/2025 off-season

Scope: 11kV cabling, transformer & substation installation, LV switchboard upgrade

Sector: Sports & Entertainment Infrastructure

Challenge: Operating near sensitive medical equipment (MRI) and ensuring zero disruption to stadium operations

Scope of Work

MD Groundworks Ltd provided end-to-end design and delivery of a high-voltage electrical upgrade, including:

  • Installation of 330 metres of 11kV cabling from the main switch room to a new external substation
  • Construction and commissioning of a high-capacity 11kV/433V transformer
  • Supply and termination of 500mm² single-core LV cables
  • Integration of a new low-voltage switchboard powering key broadcasting zones within the stadium
  • Full electromagnetic interference control and shielding near medical MRI scanners

Technical Excellence in a Sensitive Environment

The project required precision planning and phased execution due to the stadium’s complexity and operational constraints. Notably:

  • MRI medical scanners remained active and accessible throughout the project
  • Strict health & safety protocols and EMI controls were enforced to protect sensitive equipment and public visitors
  • Coordination with stadium operations, facilities, and external contractors ensured zero impact on medical or matchday readiness

Timing & Logistics

To avoid disruption to football fixtures and public events, the project was strategically delivered during the September international football break. This minimized site access issues and allowed:

  • Uninterrupted access to critical infrastructure areas
  • Efficient scheduling and just-in-time logistics
  • Zero impact on the 2024/2025 Premier League season or other stadium activities

Project Outcome

The newly installed infrastructure:

  • Fully meets the FA’s updated broadcasting power requirements
  • Supports future stadium electrical expansion
  • Enhances Brighton & Hove Albion’s matchday broadcast reliability and compliance
  • Demonstrates MD Groundworks ability to deliver complex HV infrastructure in sensitive, high-profile environments
